The best foods for weight loss...

If you're looking to drop a few pounds the first and one of the most important thing to remember is the worst way to do this is to avoid food. By not eating your body goes into starvation mode and actually clings on to your fat cells, it's your bodies way of saving them when it sees them running low.

What you eat plays a huge part in weight loss. Try not to count calories. You could eat 1000 calories a day, but that just come from crisps and biscuits, or 2000 calories a day and have it come from wholegrain, fruit, veg and lean protein. The 2000 calorie a day diet is going to be much better for you!

Let's take a look at some of the best foods for weight loss, and why...

1. Eggs

Absolutely top of our list and not just because we love them! They are really high in protein and healthy fats, both of which can keep you feeling fuller for longer. There are also so many variations of eggs; omelette, boiled egg salad, scrambled egg on wholemeal toast, for example, that you can't even get bored of them. Being low in calorie, at around 75 calories per egg, you can have a low calorie yet incredibly nutritious meal. Use 3 eggs and add some veg and you are looking at around 300 calories for a high protein, nutritious meal that will keep you feeling full.

2. Cottage cheese

This high protein, low calorie snack is up there with one of our top weight loss friendly foods. Its really low in carbs, fat and calories but high in protein. Being dairy, its also full of calcium which is thought to aid the fat burning process. We like to spread it on rice cakes and top with some cucumber for a quick, easy and really healthy snack.

3. Spice

If you can handle a bit of spice, and want to loose weight then this one is for you. Adding some fresh chilli or cayenne pepper to your meal can give your metabolism a kick, help you burn more calories and even suppress your appetite. Try adding a scoop of chilli powder to a chilli or curry that is full of lean protein and vegetables or chopping up a fresh chilli and mixing it into your salad. You can become accustom to spicy food, and it is then thought that it will not have the same effect, so save this one for a couple of times a week for maximum benefit.

4. Chia seeds

Chia seeds start off tiny but expand, so once in your stomach they get a lot bigger and fill you up and because they are so nutritious they even keep you full for a while. They are full of protein and fibre, and are actually thought to be one of the best sources of fibre. Studies show adults in the UK only get about half the daily recommended amount of fibre, so top up your intake with chia seeds! You can only get fibre in plant based foods such a fruit, veg and wholegrain, the reason it can help with weight loss is because it makes you feel full without adding a lot of extra calories.

5. Water

For so many reasons, if you want to loose weight you should up your water intake. Let's break down a few... By giving your body more to do (process the water your drinking) you are burning more calories. Often, we think we are hungry but actually we are just thirsty, if you feel peckish first grab a glass of water, wait ten minutes and see if you feel better. Drinking water before a meal can help you eat less, as you are already a little full on on that. Switching most drinks to water will help you save calories as water is 100% calorie free, and really healthy!
